Avoiding police lines, Kush and Donna headed to Emmanuel Church by Public Alley 417. They ascended to the hidden Emmanuel Music offices in an 1892 Otis elevator.
It was a narrow, ingeniously designed two-door model. One door let you in at ground level; the other, angled 90 degrees, let you out at the third floor. Leaving the Emmanuel Music offices, the process was
exactly reversed.
As required by Boston Fire Code, you could exit by a staircase, but it was guarded by a
monodirectional gate.
Now they were in Shirley's office. On the desk, John seemed to be sleeping peacefully. His breathing was strong and regular.
