Tom and Donna could still catch a 39 bus, but it would take some ingenuity. Approaching the TOTAL station at the corner of Huntington, Kush said, "Let me handle this. You've caused enough trouble already."
Walking into the station, he said "I wonder if I could ask you a favor."
"Forget it. You don't buy gas, you can't use the restrooms."
This was one tough character.
"No, it's nothing like that. You see, we need some change for the bus."
"Change? You think this is some kind of piggy bank? Go find a laundromat."
Kush was steady and firm. "Now, don't be hasty," he said. "Do you realize what I could do? I could go out, pump about
two cents' worth of gas on the pavement, and pay for it with a dollar
bill."
He was bluffing, but bluffing persuasively.
"I could do that four or five times. I could use twenties. You'd be all out of fives and low on quarters. Then where would you be?"
After a pause he added.
"If I buy ten cents of gas, we can even use your rest rooms."
